"most societies do not take their greatest thinkers seriously even when they claim to admire them"While it is true that many a time outstanding thinkers of an era are largely ignored by their contemporaries, to claim that most of the societies permanently mete out a cavalier treatment to their greatest minds would be a gross generalization and a thoughtless dismissal of human history.
The argument that many great thinkers were recognized for their true worth only posthumously, and were derided in their lifetimes, does carry some merit. Socrates and Copernicus had to undergo severe trials and tribulations for daring to propound their theories, and Jesus Christ was crucified for his conviction in his ideals. A superficial appraisal of such cases might serve to support the argument.
However, the publicity such events receive in itself shows that their ideas and thoughts were taken seriously by the society. Whether the masses in large chose to follow their philosophy is another question. Moreover, the ideas in question were not quelled by such ordeals. For example, the philosophy of Socrates was carried forward by Plato, who ensured that it gained popular currency. Similarly, the heliocentric theory of Copernicus was borne out by the observations of Galileo about a century later, and it put to rest the beliefs about the earth being the centre of the universe. Finally, while Jesus may have been crucified, his ideas never perished, and Christianity is one of the most widespread and popular religion in the world today. In sum, a genius and his great ideas will ultimately always triumph, and cannot be ignored by the society for ever.
Apart from this, there are several examples of great thinkers being recognized even during their lifetimes, and being accorded deserved respect. For instance, Mahatma Gandhi in India gained a large following both nationally and internationally, among the huddled masses as well as the prosperous intellectuals, when he propounded his theory of non-violence. He gained the fame and public support even when his ideas were in general against the establishment. Similarly, one cannot claim that Abraham Lincoln in America or Karl Marx in Europe were ignored by the society. Nor was society largely insouciant to the movement spearheaded by Martin Luther King in the United States.
In literary field also, many a great writers have been acclaimed in their lifetimes. Shakespeare became famous when he was still alive and in full form. Rabindra Nath Tagore, the acclaimed Indian philosopher and poet, became famous much before he received the Nobel Prize for literature in 1914. In fact, the very existence of such prestigious awards points to the acceptance and recognition by society of the genius behind the idea and, of course, of the idea itself.
Even in scientific field, Einstein struggled for many years before his theory of relativity became widely acceptable. However, once the scientific community realized the strength behind his theories, the impact was enormous. His theories or genius cannot be said to have been ignored by the society at large.
While it may be true that in many cases, the society fails to live up to the standards or the ideals of the great thinkers, or that it may even vehemently oppose such radical beliefs, for human nature is to resist change, this does not imply that the society has been largely insular to their ideas, and has ignored them. The fact that many of the Mahatma Gandhi's followers today are unable to live by the doctrine of non-violence, or that many Christians today do not love their neighbors as they should, is not an indication that the great ideals have been ignored. Similarly, the trials of Socrates or the stubborn refusal to believe in Copernicus' theories is not indicative of the society's indifference; rather it merely serves to show how deeply their ideas affected the society which sought so desperately to have them deny their own statements.
A glance at the chronicles of human history shows that great thinkers and their ideas have often shaped the course of history. Just as Voltaire and his contemporary writers were the driving force behind the French Revolution, Karl Marx and his books led to the Russian one. History is replete with such examples.
In conclusion, based upon the above analysis, we can conclude that it will be a fallacy and an outright denial of human history to assert that the greatest thinkers are mostly ignored by their societies. History teaches us the empirical truth that a genius with a great idea and with faith in his convictions cannot be ignored, and is a force to be reckoned with. Sometimes, a great idea is ahead of its time, and therefore will not be easily accepted, however, it cannot be put down for ever. As Hugo famously said, "Nothing can stop an idea whose time has come". ::16 真的好长,但相当精彩啊! Brilliant !!!
