235. Most people are taught that loyalty is a virtue. But loyalty—whether to one’s friends, to one’s school or place of employment, or to any institution—is all too often a destructive rather than a positive force.
Loyalty, a word that was listed as the most beautiful words in the Magazine Digest, is an indispensable virtue in our social lives. Human being is social animal, and no one likes to be alone. Hence, a healthy, stable and long term relationship is critical for one’s development, both in interpersonal development and career development. So far as I am concerned, loyalty plays a crucial part. And I will illustrate in individual perspective, group perspective and national perspective.

At the first place, loyalty means inner respect, affectation and the fundamental responsibilities we should take at the object. In this sense, loyalty is not only desirable but also indispensible virtue that we should abide by. Usually, we all built relationship with our friends, relatives. And loyalty can contribute to trust, which is the cornerstone of a long term friendship. Without basic loyalty, family will break down; individual will feel solitary and lack of security sense. In a word, loyalty plays a vital part in the establishment of a strong relationship and maintaining healthy interpersonal relationship.

Secondly, in the realm of teamwork cooperation, loyalty is still one of the most emphasized virtues. Some companies, especially Japanese companies, say, Toyota, regard loyalty as one of the most important employee’s devotion spirits. CEOs in these Japanese companies create a better self devotion and higher loyalty atmosphere. And history can witness the tremendous changes made by Japanese’s miracle.

When comes to national level, loyalty shall never be understated. My citizens, ask not what the country can do for you; ask what you can devote for the country! Such inspiring words never fail to excite everyone’s patriotism. Joan of Arc is a perfect example, she committed her everything to her homeland—France, and due to her sublime royalty to the country, her image of leading people fighting against invaders immortal. Since we are talking about national issue, disloyalty to the county will undoubtedly cause more tragedies. Just imagine what it will be like if some rebel people divulge classified secret to the invaders, the invaders can seize our homeland without effort and our citizens will suffer from the impingement, and not to mention the historic or culture treasure will be spoiled rudely. Obviously, compared with disloyalty to the individual and to the group, disloyalty to the country will result in worse situation, and we shall never let it happen.

Admittedly, too much loyalty can turn into blind and frenzy idolism or even chauvinism, which also can make the county vulnerable to the war or irrational revolutions. Hitler was blindly idolized during the Second World War in Germany, due to his demagogy speech, the German were cheated to go the war for their great leader. However, when the war was over and Germans came to their minds, they found great emptiness and questions. Hence, undue loyalty will become destructive force if no rational and proper control is imposed on it.

In summary, loyalty is still one of the greatest virtues regardless of race, color, and faith. Without loyalty, our relationship can be flimsy as paper, which no long term and reliable personal interaction can be built upon. In addition, the whole country and all the domestic residents will suffer from someone’s shameful disloyal behaviors. Nevertheless, undue loyalty can also turn to chauvinism, which may lead to catastrophe. 自己小顶下
