Should all faculty spend their time working outside the academic world relevant to the courses they teach in order to improve the quality of instruction, as the statement suggests? In response to this issue, we need analyze the proposition comprehensively and profoundly. In my opinion, I agree insofar as faculty spend time working outside the academic world relevant to the course they teach will bring a crucial and significant influence on their students to achieve more information about the major. However, I fundamentally disagree all faculty spend too much time on working outside, which would bring a negative influence on teaching.First and foremost, it is no denying the fact that faculty working outside the academic field will enhance the effect on teaching. For example, my major is electric information engineering which always need to program and design a software. My teacher got a program to make a video monitor system which will be used in Expo 2010 Shanghai for helping advance taxis' security. we take part in this program now which make us get a comprehensive interpretation about the knowledge we study on books. What's more, academia work could probably enrich students' view and enhance their interest in academic studying. It can also make students clear about the career condition of the major.
Despite the merits of the speaker's claim, however, I disagree all faculty spend too much time working outside in virtue of the factor that it is not all fields and major have a outside work relevant to their courses such as mathematics, literature and physics. If all physicists wait to work outside the academic world, how can some famous physicists like Newton to discover the law of universal gravitation and for Archimedes discover the law of buoyance. It is not feasible for all major working outside.
Finally and maybe most importantly, it is unwise to overestimate the importance of academia outside working. For one respect, the more efforts on outside working, the less concentration on teaching in campus which do harm for students' education. For another, when students pay much attention to the career condition, they will not underline the knowledge in books and no more immerge themselves in pursuing the dreams in future.
In sum, I commit to the optimal approach that we need to seek a balance and take an all-sided consideration. There are many other methods to enhance the quality in teaching rather than only by the mean working outside. For example, to make class more vivid and attract students' interests in the major. We need to choose different methods in different condition to make teaching more effective. ::31 ::81
