TOPIC: ISSUE213 - "Too much emphasis has been placed on the need for students to challenge the assertions of others. In fact, the ability to compromise and work with others-that is, the ability to achieve social harmony-should be a major goal in every school."WORDS: 471 TIME: 00:45:00 DATE: 2009/11/5 9:27:51
In this claim, the author suggests conformity rather than challenge deserves more emphasis of each school in pursuit of social harmony. In my opinion, the essence of this topic is an agrument between the collective interests and the individualism, as discussed below.
First, individualism shows the diversity of our society. In America, where is full of the air of democracy, eveyone has the rights to vote, and to criticize the government policy. What's more, students are encouraged to think critically against popular viewpoints and form their own value and worth. Other than America, many developed countries adopt critical thinking and class debate as the basis of their education.
Still, in America, though individualism and elite education are prevailing, Mr. Bush once lauched a program called "nobody left behind", to help those who have trouble in catching up with others in school. Usually, the decisions made by presidents focus on the general picture of our education. So, from this, we can conclude that social harmony is based on the collective interests and the gross national happiness rather than individualism.
From the perspective of self-development, aparting from memorizing facts and conclusions drawn by people in the past, the ability to question and challenge is more important. I agree that students who only learn the facts actually learn nothing. Every student is different, and many teachers will appreciate the thoughts with novelty more. But, under the background of goblization, even nations are interdependent, let alone individuals. No one will head the way to success smoothly without compromise and teamwork. Washington, the first American president, still remained humble to those who have helped him after becoming the president of one nation. Maybe he would never realized his American dream if it were not for the other's help and teamwork.
Back to this claim, the author argues that "too much empahsis has been placed on the need to challenge the assertion of others" on the basis that this challenge involves arrogance and no acceptance for others. Thus, he proclaim the significance of teamwork. I remember once a famous writer has said, " I may not agree with you, but, I will fight for your rights to say". The final purpose of critical thinking is the "standing on the gaint's shoulder" phenomenon.
In the final analysis of this claim, my view is clear: we need the ability to question and challenge others, because we will reap more in this way. However, it does not necessarily mean we should attack and crack those who do not share the same view with us. Usually, compromise and cooperation pave the way to success. Therefore, overemphasis on questioning is suicide. Most of the cases, we need to seek the common on the major issue while pursuing the individual difference at the same time. That is the foundation of the social harmony. 我是菜鸟 感觉各段开始稍微缺少分层次的那种词···也许是楼主不想套模板 对吧?但是我还是不敢像你那样写···不知道高手有什么意见······
