Do you need English Training in some Agents like New Oriental

We have many ways to improve our English. Like roaming on the Internet, have some foriegn friends. }#v b Z^zX
But do you need take traing course to improve your English quickly?
9IXH8A*{&IC~^2e Z 2 weeks ago, I went to New Oriental and they recommend me a 2 years learning course. After taken several lessons, I found the teachers are not like what they said, they ONLY know how to speak English, do not know what I need. Actually, they do not know what is EDUCATION, just like 80% teachers in the university.%d8P;m f7G
Anyway, do you think we need take the course in the training agents? You know, it will spend you about 15,000 per year. Let me know your opinions......

wow, so much money!TZ&L:f SB
i don't think we need take so expensive lessons. practising ourselves though reading and talking in english can also make it. or you can just take a oral english training.:VE4` RJ
i think it's enough.1A!{*ye }NEGf
the important thing is not how many knowledge we know, but how to use them.
/{&La6Igf"Q|4m what do we need is just to practise.v8b/i%]1w/b7xe

NO is just an agent which knows how to train Chinese students to pass examinations.

They don't necessary improve your English.  On the contrary, they CAN'T improve your English.  What they have trained is your testing skills.l%jY;|1e&]

choose the right one for yourself. As you said, they didn't know what you wanna get.

That's quite normal, you should choose the right one  by yourself and tell them

I think it depends, if you wanna pass exams like IELTS or TOELF , those agency might be a good choice to learn some "skills"; I have attended one section for IELTS, and i think it's usefull. It offered  some or say a little "insight" of the exam, helped me to konw what the exam is like;and what kinda of pencile should i take; when the superviser will timeing etc.  And another pros of the course is.hmmmmm make an study atmosphere but you konw sometimes there are too many classmates there...I UHO5W+Z:J

J&f{z1u"G"q3I4v and if what you want is to learn English, then it won't be a 2 year study but a lifelong study. I think there is no shortcut, you have to read more, listen more, write more and fight against forgetting...and I think that don't need that much of money, just buy exercise books fit you and doing the reading, writing, speaking, listening, translating every day whenever you got time...heheh

i do not thing we must choose training agency, learning depends on yourself.

F]LEh A(K Exactly. I've been using English, the first language I learned, for about 23 years and it hasn't yet settled to a final state. I still read, listen, etc. to pick up new words and expressions. Spending a lifetime to learn a language is not something to be discouraged over. After all, there is a point where there are no more huge improvements to make. Seeing English not as a tool but as companion-like, is already a step towards its mastery.-Wnr%G0Z"K#L?5[ h

*U x @E[^&K That being said, and coming back to the original question, one can still learn a lot in two years. It relies more on arranging one's studies cleverly than relying on classes. That's not to say that there is no value in classes, but rather everyone in the class will have a different understanding of English and, by the sounds of it, the lesson plans are too rigid to help with individual topics. I can't really give any good advice on what specifically to study since that's something individualistic. Explore the English world on your own a bit.

To use myself as an example, over the past two years I have been learning Chinese, and there are only two things I would say have had any great effect relatively quickly. The first was the audio course I first started with (quite basic), and the other was having someone write to me in Chinese with the expectation that I understand it. Even then, "quick" improvements such as these usually require some months to be fully appreciated.

emma_lihua 发表于 2007-1-24 09:48

i had my gmat lessons in the new oriental half and one years ago.^Z l/bizYb3P
i'm quite unsatisfied, as in most of lessons, especially in the reading lessons, teathers were always just talking some useless stories which had no connections with the exam. it sometimes only made me think they had nothing to say and did this only to waste time, which we had paid a lot of money for._3pp `"Q~:M
for practising one's oral english, i think it's not a good way to have lessons in such agents, as such kinds of lessons there often recruit too much students to let them really speak at lesson.

yupjessie 发表于 2007-1-24 23:20

lol~I think that,s depend on different person~

mqakgn 发表于 2007-1-24 23:49

The best way is to practice more.

I am taking an English training course in an Agent now.5gx s!~ X;JIc

I'd like to share my feeling with you guys.
q1uq\v4E
fV-f@b#iHnjp The training course takes me 12000 RMB a year(There is a discount for paying off at once).During the course time there are exactly 36 private classes and 36 salon classes for me, and there's some additional class, such as english corner and  grammar classes, whether going to the additional classes just depend on yourself.9c#JbTF%k

OM,G4Tf(Uq3?H9dl In the private class,no more than 4 students and a foreign teacher will talk for an hour ,sometimes there's a topic ,such as "On vacation""What do you think of love between boys and girls?"ect. There is no more than 8 minutes for you talking with the teacher in the class. The teacher always finishes the class on time.:)!D$L$UY wa

z*}xmd n The salon class is the same to the private class except two things---more students(no more than 8 students) and fewer time for you.
a5Q nd*` Cc;L}.J \s8o t$tM qO8?`
There are always more than 20 students in additional class, you must be brave enough to get opportunity to say something.

The agent does not give us an english environment as it said. Staffers there seldom talk with students in english.

1vNa&H/WlTL4?R All in all,the course is not that useful and isn't worthy for the fee. In my opinion, not the course make a study atmosphere, but the fee you paid, if you do not study hard, you are wasting your money. The money  will force you to be harder. /u ^[c7^$Da~

2 years' course?
7t7yJ WG4i[/J i have never heard that before, it must be something wrong with them to recommand you such course, did you accept it ?
&yU4j9W!^8p,Tz7` btw, i think the teachers themselves are animal persons, but it seems that they do not actually know how to teach us in a most efficient way, the only thinig they do is to tell uw what would be tested, so, the conclusion is ,if you have enough time and money to take the course when you are in great need, maybe it is a good choice for you to take it, if u are not in that position, you had better not to take it.
