TOPIC: ARGUMENT148 - The following appeared in the editorial section of Monroetown's local newspaper. - v3 R; }/ r" q" Q% U, j

: B3 G% P) T0 M$ P5 t$ q"Mayor Brown was recently re-elected by a clear majority of 52 percent of Monroetown's voters. Her re-election, however, does not show that most people in our town favored Mayor Brown's proposal for tax reduction over that of her opponent, Mr. Greene, who proposed raising taxes to improve education. It has been shown that voters nationwide tend to re-elect people already in office, regardless of candidates' proposals. In fact, a local survey after the election showed most people in Monroetown disagreed with Mayor Brown's proposal. Clearly most people in Monroetown favor improving education and therefore approve of Mr. Greene's proposal despite the fact that they did not vote for him."

The speaker asserts that most of the people in Monroetown tend to support Mr. Greene’s proposal of rising tax to enhance education, though they did not vote for him. To justify this assertion, the speaker claims that people across this country show penchant for re-electing candidate in office. And in advocating the advantage of Mr. Greene’s proposal, the speaker cites a local survey to show residents' disliking Mayor Brown's proposal for tax diminishment. However, the assertion depends on several unsubstantiated assumptions, which render it unconvincing as it stands.

. i; Q: x, j( {First of all, the contention that success in re-election does not mean that tax reduction policy outputs tax enhancement policy has some merits, yet the speaker is presenting a false dilemma by imposing an either-or choice between two proposals. Similarly, even if the local survey is trustworthy that people did not consent to the tax reduction proposal, it does not equal to being fond of Mr. Greene's proposal. It is entirely possible that citizen hold alternative approach to improve education such as just expanding the proportion of government's financially allocation to the schools. Moreover, rising tax may probably incur many other social, economical, family problems which might be the very reason to veto Mr. Greene. Either scenario, if it is true, would undermine this assertion.7 }" {0 M7 Y4 A3 r% S

$ |* b# U4 D% s9 g/ A$ VIn addition, when analyzing the reason for election result, the speaker applies a national research result which seems grounded, but may not fit for the circumstance of Monroetown. Since it results from the overall situation, a representative of neutralization, it is completely possible that dwellers in Monroetown emphasize on candidates’ proposal instead of their positions. In this event, Mr. Greene’s failure in election is exactly due to his dissatisfying proposal. Hence, the nationwide result that the assertion cites amount to scanty evidence that Monroetown residents in particular would favor officeholder.

However, this is not the case. Other possibilities include enhancing infrastructural investment or expanding merchant patronage, in which case the residents would fly in face of Mr. Greene’s idea. In addition, the direct influence of tax augment is aggravation of residents’ financial burden, but the speaker does not take it into account. Without considering and ruling so many possible explanations and aftermath, the speaker can not convince me that Mr. Brown's proposal is constructed to better local education and it definitely gains advocation.

) h4 I) l- B1 a4 mIn sum, this assertion sounds reasonable at the first blush, however, the speaker fails to offer sufficient evidence to substantiate that there saw a positive attitude towards Mr. Greene’s rising tax instead of Mr. Brown’s decreasing tax. To bolter it, the speaker should provide more evidence to show that people endorse Mr. Greene's plan heart and soul. To better evaluate this assertion, it would be useful to analyze the preference of native populace for election. Otherwise, I can not accept this assertion.
