ISSUE 213 - "Too much emphasis has been placed on the need for students to challenge the assertions of others. In fact, the ability to compromise and work with others-that is, the ability to achieve social harmony-should be a major goal in every school."


Has too much emphasis been placed on the need for students to challenge the assertions of others? In my personal mind, I fundermentally agree with the author's broad assertion, nevertheless, I think challenge in some sense has its own merit that we should not ingore it. We should strike the balance between challenge and compromise.
Adimittedly, Undue challenge with the assertions of others will do harm to the students, what is more, to the school. There is no doubt that if one is always challenged by others, he or she will lose his or her heart to express thoughts, or may be agitated to be angry. This brings no good to everyone. If the situation goes on, there will be no one want to express thought and we can not make progress. So, It is to say, if we have different thoughts with others, we should choose moderate methods to express our thought so that others can easily accept.
In the rapid progressing world, students should absorb numerous knowledge than ever before, and they should learn more all by themselves which take less time to study with others. Students want to be more knowledgable that they will not fall behind others. And they would like challenge each other so that they can find out what they are weak in ,so they can immediately improve it .Challenge can not only make students catch up with current affairs but also in some extent can make student more sensitive to social harmony, because through some challenge, students from different regions finally become good friends. When I was in my senior school, I was sent to a defending competition in our province, in the competitive place, we challenged others’ assertions, and debated on the topic, but during that time, I made a lot of friends with those competitors, and we admired each other's broad assetions, exchanged our mind, and now we still contact with each other .
When comes to compromise and working with others, every school will appraise those actions. Because they can make the school in harmony which is suit the progress of the school. When working with others ,students absorb differents thoughts and suggestions so that they can take more facets into consideration which can make things more perfect .But it is not to say compromise is the only way to make things better. Undue compromise can damage the innovations of students and those who always compromise with others will frustrate and they will lose their heart to imagine. All of those can disturb the progressing of a school.
To sum up, both challenge and compromise are important, it is hard to say which one is more important. When comes to different conditions, students should have their own perception to decide whether challenge or compromise. We should not afraid to speak out our thoughts, at the meantime, we should not close our door to hear others' voice, when we find out others' mind to be meaningful, and we can absorb them without sacrificing our own faith. Only challenge and comprome working together can make the school progress in harmony.
