首先请问划线部分是什么意思？上面堆了一层....高的泥？ 我选了D，有的说应该是A，请教~

Bank 在这里是动词，在 American Heritage Dictionary 里有两个可能的解释：
1. To border or protect with a ridge or embankment.
2. To pile up; amass: banked earth along the wall.
从语境可以看得出应该是 2，意思就是周围堆了三、四尺高的泥土。

这里答案是 D，因为如果 A 的话，那就要沿用前面的 was。但是前面 was 后跟的是 conical，是形容词，而后面跟的是 banked。这里的 banked 不应该看是做定语的 participle，而是应该看成是 被动式的 participle。（这个分别是要用语感判断的。）所以 was conical 与 was banked 不平行，那就不能沿用，所以应该在后分句把整个动词——was banked——写出来。

As high as 和 to a height of 是有分别的。to a height of 是中性的，只说明有多高。as high as 却有许多暗含的意义或是色彩。

例如：The flood water is as high as the roof of his house.  这是用来做比较的。这里不能用 to a height of 来代替。

It is amazing that he could have risen as high as he did when he does not know anything to speak of. 这是抽象的用法，也是不能用 to a height of 来代替的。

The tree has grown to a height of twenty feet in just two years.  这句如果说成 The tree has grown as high as twenty feet in just two years. 就有点不顺口，主要是因为应该用 tall 而不是用 high。

The airplane has flown to a height of 30,000 feet.  如果说：The airplane has flown as high as 30,000 feet. 就给人不完整的感觉。要消除这种感觉就要在后面加东西，如：The airplane has flown as high as 40,000 feet without encountering any problem.  The airplane has flown as high as 40,000 feet before its engines became labored.

这些分别多看书就自然会学到。我也是从来没有想过这两个词组有什么分别，但是语感告诉我使用的方法。

我觉得在这句里面用 as high as three or four feet 还是与 to a height of three to four feet 不同的。前者就是多了一点很微妙的感情，而后者是绝对中性的。
