ISSUE 48
The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten." 48. 对历史的研究把太多的重点放在对某些个人上。而历史上一些重大的事件和发展趋势不是由个别名人决定的,而可能是由那些已经被人们淡忘的人制造的
Should people pay more attention to those people who truly made the most significant events and trends in history and have been forgotten by history, as the speaker asserts? In a sense, I tend to agree that without people’s support the events and trends which are significant and famous cannot happen. However, the speaker begs question by overlooking the crucial role of famous few and unfairly give them a second priority. In my point of view, both individuals and groups of people are critical to significant events and trends in history, and an all-sided consideration is needed when deciding the precedence.
Admittedly, no one can neglect the power of people when they associated together by significant events and trends. For instance, the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome — SARS which occurred in 2004 as a terrible disease that we never want to mention. It is a bad memory for Chinese people because it took away many people’s life and broke up the happiness family. However, to face this awful disaster the Chinese never give up. Although, SARS is translate through air anyone who is careless to contact with it would infected easily, No one escaped when someone needs help. People built up a large isolation area of sickroom in ten days which would cost half year as usual. People adopted child whose parent were killed by SARS and the donation never paused. It is the people’s strength that when they face the hard time they would never lay down and what they do is just keep moving. It is undoubted that history cannot write down their name one by one. But people would never forget this fact which is made by groups of people, not the famous few.
Nevertheless, it is the individuals not the groups of people who decide the event’s happen and the trend’s development in some art and science area. Why history always remember the famous few not the groups of people when the most significant events and trends occurred? Is it unfair or bias? The answer must be negative because it is the person who made the most significant events and trends and then became famous. They were famous just because what exactly they do. Consider, for example, Human beings have paid tribute to Copernicus for the first step he took in ignoring established boundaries and challenge long-standing assumption of astronomy then publish his Heliocentric conjecture that the earth and other planets revolves around the sun. Does anyone help him during this significant event? No, it is his own effort what to make history and people remember him.
Furthermore, it is unwise and unjustifiable to say it is the people to make all of most significant events and trends in history. The truth is that both of the famous few and groups of people make them happen. The American Civil War is a good case in point. Before the Civil War, the laws in the south of the America permitted the white farm owners to have the black people as their private slaves. Obviously, these laws, which not only maintained the privileges for white people, but totally violated the human rights of black people, were unjust laws and must be resisted. Therefore, Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, led the Union during the Civil War to destroy the unjust laws in the south. I think the heroes that we should keep in heart not only Abraham Lincoln but also the people who fight for their freedom and unjustifiable fair in this war.
In sum, when it comes to whether the famous few or groups of people should plays a crucial role in history, I think it is both of them. No one’s effort should be forgotten by the world when the most significant events and trends in history are occurred. In the final analysis, then, I fundamentally disagree with the speaker’s claim.
