Dear Prospective Graduate Student:
7 U- p4 P! i$ P% |4 FWe have received your inquiry concerning graduate work in the Department of Mechanical Engineering.. u( x' o, H; r) ?$ Z- }& T
We consider only very highly qualified applicants for admission.  The minimum achievement for consideration is a first-class rating, a 3.00 GPA on a 4.00 scale in the last 60(+) credits in your undergraduate degree, or a 78% standing in a Mechanical Engineering undergraduate program.  Students must be thoroughly conversant with written and spoken English, and international students are required to take either the TOEFL examination (scores above 580 are desirable) or the Michigan ELI (scores above 90 are preferred).  Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores are required.  A GRE score (Verbal + Quantitative + Analytical) less than 1500 is considered marginal for admission in the older test method. A total of 1100 or better in Verbal and Quantitative and 3.5 or better in the Analytical in the newest test method. Applicants with scores less than admissible should retake the exam or supply reasons for their low score with the application. While the above are the minimum requirements for admission, past experience indicates that only truly exceptional students receive offers of support from faculty in our Department.
( [8 p0 u, T, o; m* DYou are strongly encouraged to apply electronically.  Application materials are available on the websites:  http://www.wisc.edu/grad/eapp/eapp.pl and http://www.engr.wisc.edu/me. You need to complete both the Graduate School and ME Department forms.  Also, your application will not be processed until the application fee is received. Complete instructions are available on the websites.
+ I4 X3 a$ ^  d, `& @% R4 e4 {+ q! cIf you are unable to apply electronically, financial constraints necessitate that we use a pre-screening process prior to mailing applications to international students. Accordingly, please fill out the following Pre-Screening Prospective Graduate Student Summary Sheet. Return this form and documentation of your TOEFL/ELI scores to the address below.
9 r* H' ~& T$ Y; c5 ~. OThis Summary Sheet will be studied carefully to ensure you meet our admission standards. Then, your information will be circulated to the faculty in the department in an attempt to match your interests and skills with their research programs. You may also contact faculty individually in your interest areas to discuss possible research projects. If a faculty member expresses a potential interest in having you as a graduate student, a full application will be mailed to you.: G+ O0 G6 G( T. C
Financial aid, if available, is administered by the student's faculty advisor.  There is little likelihood of foreign students receiving financial aid for their first year of study.
. [% C# N8 y1 |4 T3 KFor details on our graduate degree programs and courses, refer to the Graduate School Bulletin of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.  Copies of this bulletin should be available at the United States Information Office at the U.S. Embassy or at your own university library.  It also can be found on the World Wide Web site (http://www.wisc.edu/grad).  We do not mail out graduate school bulletins.  For department information, see http://www.engr.wisc.edu/me., [; u- N. The Admissions Committee uses the Fricke Index to screen applicants. The Index is calculated using the G.P.A. as well as the Verbal and Quantitative GRE scores. Two separate Fricke Indices are calculated: (1) using GRE scores and G.P.A. for junior and senior undergraduate grades, and (2) using GRE scores and G.P.A. for the master's degree (if applicable). Normally, it is expected that the minimum standards will be Indices of 5.6 (using junior-senior G.P.A.) and 6.0 (using master's degree G.P.A.). For example, an Index of 5.6 is equivalent to 50th percentile scores on the two GRE measures and a G.P.A. of 3.4 on a 4.0 scale. The Fricke Index is calculated using the following formula: Fricke Index= [Verbal GRE + Quantitative GRE]/400 + G.P.A.

Dates for Fall, Spring & Summer Semester Application ( b. x/ l3 ]+ e: h* r. n4 s7 M( m
Fall semester begins the academic year. Although the Graduate School accepts applications in certain departments until July 15 (for all foreign applicants the deadline is April 1), most places are filled in April and May, and most departments have earlier deadlines. If you wish to be considered for financial aid awards, so indicate on the application form. In order to consider you for financial aid we must receive your complete application before December 3. To determine application deadlines for individual disciplines, please consult with the specific department and/or their websites. ; w2 k3 w0 r* Z7 @9 J# v, \
The deadline for spring semester applications is November 1, and for the summer session it is April 1. Since many disciplines have sequences of courses beginning in the fall semester, some departments admit for fall semester only: see the requirements in the Departmental Program and Non-Degree Program section.
