It's interesting to note that insurance has existed in some form for a very long time. The earliest insurance policies were called bottomry contracts. They provided shipping protection for merchants as far back as 3000 B.C.. r6 P1 A; Y/ u. I( O- W* g3 M, H
In general, the contracts were often no more than verbal agreements. They granted loans to merchants with the understanding than if a particular shipment of goods was lost at sea, the loan didn't have to be repaid. Interest on the loans varied according to how risky it was to transport the goods. During periods of heavy piracy at sea, for example, the amount of interest and the cost of the policy went up considerably.
8 y# {- Z; B# a7 J7 O$ n, `So, you can see how insurance helped encourage international trade. Even the most cautious merchants became willing to risk shipping their goods over long distances-not to mention in hazardous weather conditions-when they had this kind of protection available.

Microbubbles Cut Cost of Algae-Derived Biofuel

Algae naturally produce oil. When it’s processed, that oil can be turned into biofuel, an alternative energy source. There’s just one snag, harvesting the oil from algae-filled water is prohibitively expensive. But researchers have came come up with an ever best effervescent solution, bubbles smaller than the width of a human hair can help reduce the costs of collecting algae oil. So-called microbubbles are already used for water purification, they surround contaminants and float them out of the liquid. Similarly, in water containing algae, bubbles can float the algae to the surface for easy collection and processing. The research builds on previous work that used microbubbles to grow algae more densely and than thus increase production. This time, however, the researchers produced the fizziness with a new method that uses far less energy, and is cheaper to install. The study is in the journal Biotechnology and Bioengineering. Although microbubbles improve algae harvesting in the lab, they still have to work at a larger scales. The researchers are planning a pilot program for an algae biofuel plant, in the hope of ** really green energy.

algae ['ælɡə-dʒi:, 'ældʒi:]

n. [] 藻类;[] 海藻

effervescent [,efə'vesənt]

adj. 冒泡的,沸腾的;兴奋的

float [fləut]

vt. 使漂浮;实行

n. 彩车,花车;漂流物;浮舟;浮萍

densely ['densli]

adv. 浓密地;密集地

fizziness: n.

To do this, Newman attached weights to the divers and then lowered them into the tank and onto the treadmill. These weights were carefully adjusted so that the divers could experience underwater the gravity of the Moon and of Mars as they walked on the treadmill. Newman concluded that walking on Mars will probably be easier than walking on the Moon. The Moon has less gravity than Mars does, so at lunar gravity, the divers struggled to keep their balance and walked awkwardly. But at Martian gravity, the divers had greater traction and stability and could easily adjust to a pace of 1.5 miles per hour. As Newman gradually increased the speed of the treadmill, the divers took longer, graceful strides until they comfortably settled into an even quicker pace. Newman also noted that at Martian gravity, the divers needed less oxygen.( ?- b  `2 o8 w2 L8 ~# H9 T

Have Your Cake And Eat Its Package

Picture an orange. It’s encased in a biodegradable shell; the peel’s even somewhat edible, as normal materials marmalade fans can attest. But we humans often package food in plastic, with its environmental and disposal challenges. So Harvard scientist David Edwards and colleagues thought, why not take advantages of advances in materials science to mimic nature? They call their result WikiCells. Edwards recently described the development in a talk at Harvard’s Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering. Taking note at of natural nature's clever packaging, Edwards and his team created a membrane made of charged particles of edible substances bang bound by electrostatic forces. The membrane surrounds a liquid, foam or solid food. Then that membrane is surrounded by an edible or biodegradable hard shell. The researchers are testing WikiCells at Harvard’s partner Le Laboratoire in Paris, where people are munching on containers of ice cream and soup. The technology is currently a bit of a novelty. But the scientists are working on shelf stability and test taste to create a variety of consumer products. Maybe in the future you’ll be able to sip some juice, and eat the package. Of course, clam chowder served in bread bowls is already available in the Harvard area.

Honey Helps Heal Wounds

Honey soothes a sore throat. Now research suggests that it could also help fight serious skin infections. People have used honey's antibacterial properties for centuries. Now, scientists are discovering just how it works, and that it might be even better than antibiotics. After surgery or a skin injury, many otherwise harmless bacteria that live on the skin can infect the wound site. One type of strep is particularly common and can lead to stubborn wounds that refuse to heal. But researchers found that honey, in particular that made from bees foraging on manuka flowers, stopped this strep in its tracks. The study is in the journal Microbiology. In lab tests, just a bit of the honey killed off the majority of bacterial cells, and cut down dramatically on the stubborn biofilms they formed. It could also be used to prevent wounds from becoming infected in the first place. Hospital-borne infections are all too common, with more and more strength strains developing resistance to standard antibiotic treatments. So if the honey works in clinical trials, too, this sweet news will be all the buzz.

Signs Boost Stair Climbing

There’s an easy way to encourage people to take the stairs instead of an elevator, put up a sign reminding them to. Previous studies have found out that signs work, but those efforts didn’t different differentiate between up and down trips and didn’t include a variety of building types and populations. And the studies didn’t last long enough. So researchers did a new study, in three New York structures, a three-story health clinic, an eight-story academic building, and a 10-story affordable housing site. They established a baseline of how many trips left from all or returned to the lobby. Then this sign went up: “Burn calories, not electricity. Take the stairs!” A week later, significantly more people did just that. And nine months later the researchers checked to see if stairs use was still up. And it was. The health care center still had a 20 percent increase in vertical climbs. And the affordable housing unit sustained a 42 percent overall increase in stair use. The research was published in the American Journal of Prevented Preventive Medicine. New York City has since distributed thousands of such stair signs to city buildings, a nearly 3 free intervention for a healthier population.

Close Super Bowl Boosts Ad At End

Advertisers will drop 3.5 million dollars for a 30-second spot during Sunday’s Super Bowl. But to get the most bang for their buck, they might want to play their ad right after the game ends, not during it. Because if it's a close one, the time slot right after the final gun should have the most sway with viewers. So says a study in the Journal of Advertising. Researchers had 112 undergrads watch old color college basketball games. Half saw a suspenseful match, the others, a landslide win. And each game had four randomly-inserted ads: two halfway through, two at game’s end. Turns out the brand advertised right after a suspenseful game made the biggest pressure impression on students. The authors say that's because a viewer's arousal builds during the game. And after a win, all that excitement gets transferred to the ad. But only if the ad itself is thrilling, like a dramatic Nike ad they played. A dull Sudafed infomercial fumbled in the same slot. And it doesn’t matter whether you’re rooting for the Patriots or the Giants, either. As long as there’s a nail-biter, that final ad may be poised to score a touchdown.

Tonight I'm going to talk about the most basic aspect of survival - the space suit. When most of you imagine an astronaut, that's probably the fist thing that comes to mind, right? Well, without spaces suits, it would not be possible for us to survive in space听成and stay. For example, outer space is a vacuum - there's no gravity or air pressure; without protection, a body would explode. What's more, we'd cook in the sun or freeze in the shade - with temperatures ranging from a toasty听成totally 300 degrees above to a cool 300 degrees below zero Fahrenheit.0 z1 z  t! `% u
The space suit that NASA has developed is truly a marvel. This photo enlargement here is a life-size image of an actual space suit worn by astronauts on the last space shuttle mission. This past is the torso - it's made of seven extremely durable layers. This thick insulation protects against temperature extremes and radiation. Next听成that is what they call a "bladder" of oxygen - that's an inflatable sac, filled with oxygen, to simulate atmospheric pressure. This bladder presses against the body with the same force as the Earth's atmosphere at sea level. The innermost layers provide liquid cooling and ventilation. Despite all the layers, the suit is flexible, allowing free movement so we can work.Another really sophisticated part of the space suit is the helmet. I brought one along to show you. Can I have a volunteer come and demonstrate?

Lack of Sleep Might Make You Feel Hungrier

Scientists are still trying to understand the full purpose of sleep. But we know one thing it’s probably good work for: it may help keep you all night on that diet. Researchers scanned the brains of 12 normal weight men, while they looked at images of high and low caloric food, after a night of normal sleep and then also a night without any sleep. After one night of zero sleep the scans showed a high level of activity in the area responsible for hunger, the right anterior cingulate cortex. Now, this response was independent of how hungry a subject claimed he was before scanning, as well as the caloric content associated with the food in the pictures. Interestingly, after looking at the food images, subjects who went without sleep reported that they were hungrier than those who’d snoozed the night away. But blood glucose levels taken before the subjects were shown images of food were the same as those measured after. So sleep loss resulted in what scientists call “hedonic stimulus processing”, they had a heightened desire to eat, independent of their blood glucose levels. Take home message: lack of sleep plus Food TV equals phony hunger. And probably real pounds.

How to Make Electricity Using Plants and Sunshine

When plants engage in photosynthesis, sunlight breaks apart water and CO2 to release oxygen and build plant, and people food. It's cheap and ubiquitous but not much useful for powering a home. Photovoltaic devices use semiconducting material like silicon in a related way, with incoming photons knocking loose electrons to generate electricity. Such devices can produce a lot of electricity on a bright sunny day. Unfortunately, they're too expensive for most folks to afford. But what if you combined the two? That's exactly what an international consortium of scientists have done, creating a truly green solar cell, and one that can be made from something as common as grass clippings. The findings are in the current issue of Nature: Scientific Reports. This electric nanoforest only produces a trickle of electricity at present, but with refinement it could begin to produce useful amounts of current. Plus, the raw materials are durable and cheap, any living green vegetation will do, nature has seen to that. If such devices can be improved substantially enough, plant-based photovoltaics may finally bring affordable solar power to the remote villages where it's needed most.

Flame Dances on Board Space Station

Starting a fire on the International Space Station might not sound like such a good idea. But that's just what researchers have been doing since 2009, albeit with very small flames in controlled conditions. Working remotely from a NASA center in Cleveland, they ignite small droplets of liquid fuel in a combustion chamber on the space station. The three-year-old raw project is called the Flame Extinguishment Experiment, or FLEX. A second round of experiments just began in January. And a predecessor to FLEX flew on several space shuttle missions in the 1990s. Why all the interest in space flames? Well, fire in microgravity is a curious creature, and researchers would like to have a better understanding of how it behaves. The buoyant forces that cause hot air to rise and cold air to sink don't really work in the absence of gravity. And the shape of the flame itself is different in space. When a droplet of fuel ignites, the flame surrounds it as a sphere about the size of an olive. The results of the experiments could help improve fire-fighting technology in space. Which, I think we can agree, is a good idea indeed.

Visual Cues Encourage Vegetable Consumption

Americans still fall short of the recommended daily portions of fruits and vegetables. And kids are notoriously averse to veggies at the school cafeteria. So researchers tested whether visual cues of healthful foods could increase consumption at a grade school with 800 students. First the scientists determined how many kids put carrots and green beans on their trays and how much they ate. Three months later they did the same analysis. But on the second day, the trays had pictures of carrots and green beans in the trays’ compartments. On the day with the photo cues, more than twice as many kids took green beans as on the control day, and more than three times as many kids took carrots. Average consumption per student went up as well. The study was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. The researchers note that the effect needs to be tested elsewhere for longer than two days. And the amount of veggies eaten still didn’t meet government recommendations. But if pictures of burgers can sell meaty meals, maybe fresh fruit and veggie food photos can play a part in the campaign for healthier kids.
