issue 74. The most effective way to communicate an idea or value to large groups of people is through the use of images, not language.
The images and language are two basic sources we used to communicate an ideas or value. The speaker asserts that using image to communicate an idea or value to large groups of people is more effective than using language. I have to admit that images do have distinguished properties in some aspects of idea or value communication, however, not all. In order to make the communication more effective, the use of image and language should be combined together.
The use of images can be effective in some respects compared with language. The first to be mentioned is that with the booming of computers and the development of internet, the images or video composed of images could be shared by people all through the world regardless of the separate distances. In this way, the ideas and value implicated in the images could be communicated simultaneous and what’s more, since the images can be conveniently stored, you can review them whenever you want. At second place the method for communicating using images could make some minute details more acceptable and clearer and it give people a longer time to reflect thus can better absorb what they had been received. The impact when you saw an image of a gorilla reaching its hand to Jane Goodall who is a women studying gorilla all her life is more striking than when you just heard it form other people. At last, when your objects are a group of people who are deaf, you can show them images and in this way they can share your opinions.
Through these images, what once you can only hear now you can see and you can get a whole complete structure which the method using language is incapable of presenting. However, the communication using images still have some deficiencies where the communication using language play an dominant role.l
Firstly, the communication using language can be made anywhere while the communication using image can not. You met your friends accidentally, began talking something about the past, in this situation, the language invoked all the collections even if there are no images at hand. Secondly, the language can help elucidate the underlying connotation inside the images. For instance, you present large groups of people a series of images that can best describe your view about something, without any explanation about all these images, people may distort the real meaning you want to impress. People can better understand your viewpoint only after you tell them your real meaning behind the images. Thirdly, in some specific situations in which the large groups of people is blind, you could talk with them, exchange opinions with them and listen to them while the images showing are useless.
Neither of the communication using images or the communication using language is effective for they both have their limitations. They entangled with each other and can not be separated.
In conclusion, the use of language and the use of images should be combined together in order to make communication more effective. The image can give us a whole structure and more vivid details while sometimes it relies on language to elucidate the underlying connotation. Neither can achieve the same result without another.
